When manners are tossed to the side (of the computer)

For the past 7 years and 4 months I’ve had the luxury ability to be a work at home mom. What this means for me is that I am an independent contractor working for a company with a set hours of work per day/week. I have the flexibility to go to the school if I need to. As well as hit up doctor appointments when necessary (and as I’m pregnant, they are necessary). The downside to this is that I work solely via the computer.

Now don’t get me wrong. I love my computer. As the saying goes, most of my friends live in it. But just like in real life, there are a lot of bad eggs that live in it as well. And after 7+ years, I’ve learned pretty quickly who is going to be a bad egg more often than not. But that doesn’t mean it still doesn’t sting.

So on that note, begin rant: I find it utterly amazing how easily (and swiftly!) people toss away their manners (assuming they’ve had any to begin with) when they sit down in front of the computer.

People, let’s get this straight once and for all… when you are emailing or posting a comment or replying to a message board post, there is undoubtedly a person on the other side reading what you’re writing.

So no, being on a computer does not mean that you can use smilies to “passively” roll your eyes at someone. Nor does it mean you can be rude and obnoxious. And no, no you can’t just demand everything under the sun in a tone that makes you sound like you need a good smack upside the head. WHERE ARE YOUR MANNERS?!?!

Let’s assume for a minute that you do have manners. And let’s assume you’re looking for help with a problem. Wouldn’t it also be right to assume that if you asked politely that you’d get what you want, rather than ticking off the person who can help you, so much so that said person no longer is willing to help you ever again?

Thought so.

And I really hope that these people that toss their manners to the side—Miss Manners be damned—aren’t teaching the younger generation to do the same. Although if I were a betting person, I’d bet a million that they are. For shame.

So in conclusion (I’ve always wanted to say that!) let’s try to remember that yes, Virginia, there is a person sitting in front of their computer reading what you’re spewing.

The flu shot

I got the flu shot a few weeks ago, nothing new there—I’ve been getting the flu shot for quite a few years (I always managed to get the flu the week after Christmas, leading up to New Years and having it last all month long and taking horse-sized pills to get better). I also wanted the kiddo to get his, as he’s around kids/people more than I am. And, contrary to what the principal wants to happen, some parents still send their kids to school when they’re sick. (Thanks for that!)

I couldn’t get an appointment with our pediatrician—they are out of state (my fault really, since I don’t want to discuss and go over the kiddo’s medical history over and over with new doctors—a Vein of Galen Malformation often stumps them) so we went to the local walk-in place. We normally go there when it’s something minor, like a sore throat or a cold/cough, so they know us. Anyway, what I’m attempting to get to is: did you all know that the flu shot this year contains the H1N1 in it?! I was not made aware of this. And the nurse told me that because the kiddo didn’t have H1N1 last year and because he’s under 10, he’ll need a second dose of the flu shot in a month. That got me thinking. He’s had the flu shot before, so I know that wasn’t the case. And everything I read online states the 2nd dose is for those under 9. I called the doctor’s office and they told me that 10 and under is the recommendation. I’m beyond confused at this point. The only thing I can think of is that since he didn’t get the H1N1 last year, that since it’s combined this year, it’s considered not getting a flu shot before (per this chart).

Dieting Sucks.

Man, it’s brutal having to diet. I love food. Food loves me. Too much. Especially at this time of year, when the fall shows are coming back on (so sitting in front of the TV is more common) and comfort, warm food is essential. Bah. I loathe thinking of food all the time. But one look at food and the weight jumps on me.

I haven’t walked since Thursday—the kiddo had off Thursday and Friday for Rosh Hashanah. Monday I’m going to pick it up again. Thursday I walked 1.6 miles. I hope to get it to 2.2 (it’s one more round to get to that).

But, a girl can dream about sanitized tapeworms, canned no less. :)

June 2nd—what the frak?!

Oy. How did we get to June 2nd already? I remember it was just the other day that I was planning my invites for the 4th of July party. What started as a small event has 88 people now invited. Just so you can get an idea, my house is just shy of 1200sq ft. ;) Hopefully, it will be nice so we can stay outside. Plenty of room out there, thankfully.

But seriously, time seems to be disappearing quicker and quicker. Things I plan on doing, just no time. Never any time for fun stuff. Shoot, never any time for just regular stuff. Here I sit at the old computer, when I have a brand new one sitting (and operating) right next to me. But I haven’t had the time to copy everything over to it. So yes, I’ve got TWO desktops and monitors running on one desk. Talk about multitasking! LOL

Something seriously needs to change, lol. I have digiscrap challenges I want to try (anyone who is interested, check out Scrap Orchard’s 28 Days for Free’Bees). I have pages that I want to scrap that aren’t part of a challenge. I have teacher gifts to scrap. I have Father’s Day coming up. I have soooo much to do. I need more hours!

Sorry. I’m done. Just so frustrating that there isn’t enough time (or that I’m scheduling correctly!). And on that note, I’m off for my walk. Trying to lose 10 pounds by July 4th. Would love more, but 10 would be a good start. :)

The rain, rain, rain came down, down, down

In rushing, rising riv’lets. And puddles. And lakes. And pools. Flooding everywhere. Closing the roadways.

Which, of course is not good when you need the babysitter {aka Grammy} to get to your house. And since she couldn’t, the kiddo went to the doctors with me. And after an hour wait, I was told that the test couldn’t be done because he’s there with me. Sigh. So I decided enough was enough and asked for my records. I’m finding a new doctor. This one hasn’t done a darn thing for me since the very beginning. I’m in pain, but being ignored.

So now we’re home, I’m feeling not so terribly bad {knock on wood}, and waiting for a return call from a new doctor. Sigh. (Can one sigh too much?)

On a positive note, we did mail out our taxes to the accountant {aka father-in-law} so those should be done before the 15th. ;) AND – I’ve officially lost 60 pounds. Of course, I’ve really lost 100… lost 65, gained 40, lost 35. :S
